Through identification with Jesus, we are able to bring the application of His death and resurrection to a reality in our lives. It is symbolized by baptism. As we are submerged in the water, we declare our old sin nature crucified with Him; and as we emerge from the water, we rise up in newness of life. This takes place in our hearts. Baptism is an outward expression of what we believe in our hearts. Day by day we identify with the Lord, by faith, so we can walk in victory.
Application comes from association. Our relationship with the Lord is the foundation of our walk with Him. Without fellowship there cannot be any partnership. When anything tries to rise up from our old man, we regard it as destroyed. It’s not destroyed to the point of nonexistence, but it is rendered inactive and powerless. It is then that we can be free from temptation, even when it’s all around us. We are not liberated of this or that because it’s not in sight, but because we now live by faith.
When we travel abroad we show our identification to enter another country. Similarly, our identification in Christ gives us access to new realms of the reality of His glory. Areas of new freedoms are entered, and great peace is attained. Our identity in Christ is the reality we walk in, from glory to glory!
Romans 6:5-6 For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin.
